For Multigenerational Families... A Place to Call Home

According to 2020 census data, nearly 60 million Americans are living in a multigenerational household. This number has steadily increased over the last 50 years with no signs of slowing. There are different reasons why people are choosing to live in multigenerational households but there are some very common benefits including the development of stronger relationships and an increased sense of connection and well-being.

Multigenerational households are defined as including two or more adult generations (with adults mainly ages 25 or older) or a “skipped generation,” which consists of grandparents and their grandchildren younger than 25. (Pew Research)

Union Village offers a variety of house plans and housing types to accommodate multigenerational living within individual homes and the community at large. This means all residents can benefit from stronger relationships and a greater sense of belonging. So, no matter what stage of life you’re in – whether you’re just starting out, raising a family, enjoying retirement, or have a multigenerational family - Union Village is a great place to call home.

Building Homes for Multiple Generations Under One Roof

Union Village comprises different types of homes to accommodate residents in different stages of life. This includes a mix of smaller cottages and larger homes, as well as townhomes. There are also plans to add apartments in future development.

The builders we work with offer many options so homes can be customized to suit your current needs with the ability to adapt as life situations change. For example, Shannon Lachenman president of Brookstone Homes, is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist who strives to build homes “that will be lived in for generations to come.”

Some home plans have flex rooms that can be used as an office or additional bedroom as needed. Other homes include options for bedrooms and baths on the lower/basement level and have recreation rooms that can be converted to living areas for young adults living in the home.

For older residents and others with mobility concerns, there are single story homes and multi-story home plans that have the living area, bedrooms, and bath all on the first floor. Some even have first floor primary suites with direct outdoor access to provide privacy and independence for family members.

The Bungalow (shown under construction) is one of many house plans than can be customized with a lower-level bedroom suite. The Miami River Cottage has a large living space above the garage, connected to the rest of the home via breezeway.

Creating a Community for Everyone

At Union Village, a variety of homes are placed in close proximity to each other and to “third places” like parks and future shopping and dining destinations. The neighborhood is designed to be walkable, so residents—without driving a car—can easily meet up, while living in homes that may be quite different from each other’s. This concept separates Union Village from most other new residential developments.

Union Village is built on the 8-to-80 principle: a community must be built specifically to serve eight-year-olds, 80-year-olds and everyone in between. Designing neighborhoods for all age groups allows people to spend more of their life in their home or neighborhood. This means people can remain a part of their community longer.

Throughout the neighborhood, large front porches and green spaces set a scene for families and neighbors of all ages to come together. We believe attributes like this and the 10 Principles of New Urbanism create a vibrant, better place to call home.
