Simply Living: Tips to Spruce up Your Porch in Winter

After the holiday decorations come down, things can look a little bleak and boring. Especially on the gray, dreary days of winter. Sprucing up your porch décor can make your home warm and inviting on even the coldest day. We’ve gathered three tips to make your porch the place everyone will want to gather for hot cocoa after a day of playing in the snow.

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.”
― Edith Sitwell

Decorate Your Door

The front door is where you actually welcome visitors into your home, so why not give it a little personality? Hang an evergreen wreath or swag for a classic look that will last all winter. Or if your style is a little less traditional, maybe a wreath wrapped in a scarf or something else entirely. You can hang a flat basket filled with greenery or a whimsical sign. There are many different options to add a little pizazz to the door and invite your guests in.

Add Some Greenery

Mary Starnes from The Windowbox Gardener and Porch Pots Direct suggests adding greenery to liven up your porch. If you have an existing boxwood or other shrub in a planter, accent it with evergreen trimmings and pine cones that you gather on a winter walk.

Cut the branches at least 12 inches long, insert them into the soil at varying heights to cover the soil, then add the pine cones for more interest.

If you don’t have a potted shrub or feel overwhelmed trying to design your own masterpiece, you can order beautiful, pre-made arrangements from Porch Pots Direct that you can drop right in your planter and be done.

Either way, don't forget to water them periodically as all fresh evergreens need water to stay fresh.

Have Fun with Accessories

Accessories are another way to add some life and fun to your porch. Prop a large wood or metal sign that says “Welcome” or that has a cute saying next to the front door or in a corner. Hang vintage ice skates or snowshoes from a wooden sled or skis. Incorporate things that remind you of all the fun things you can do in winter. Just make sure to include a functional welcome mat so the snow from all those fun activities doesn’t make it in the house.
